Background: Established in 1958 in DC.

Purpose and activities: The foundation provides funds to advance education, research, and self-development for women; and to foster equity and positive social change.

Program area(s): The grantmaker has identified the following area(s) of interest:

 

Career Development Grants: Sixty-one $2,000 to $8,000 grants support women currently holding a bachelor's degree who are preparing for career advancement, career change, or to re-enter the work force. There are two categories: Academic Grants provide support for course work toward a master's degree or specialized training in technical or

professional fields; and Professional Development Institute Grants support women's participation in professional institutes that are academically based to advance

professionally within a discipline or profession, or to enter a discipline or profession.

 

Community Action Grants: Provides seed money of $5,000-$10,000 for two years to individual women and AAUW branches and states for innovative programs or non-degree research projects that promote education and equity for women and girls for long-term programs (restricted to projects focused on K-12 girls achievement in math, science, and/or technology).

 

Dissertation Fellowships: Fifty-one $20,000 awards are available to women who are in the final year of a doctoral degree program, and are completing the writing of dissertations between July 1 and June 30.

 

Eleanor Roosevelt Teacher Fellowships: Awards a range of grants to provide professional development opportunities to women public school teachers: 1) Professional

Development Fellowships: Awards up to $5,000 to public school teachers for professional development around gender-equity issues. 2) Project Implementation Grants:

Awards up to $10,000 to women public school teachers for classroom or school projects that advance gender equality. 3) Dissemination Grants: Awards up to $2,000 to support

information sharing about model gender-equity projects.

 

International Fellowships: Fifty-seven fellowships ranging from $18,000-$30,000 are awarded for full-time study or research in the U.S. to women who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Both graduate and postgraduate study is supported.

 

Postdoctoral Research Leave Fellowships: Twenty $30,000 awards offer one-year support for women who will have earned a doctoral degree by Nov. 15.

 

Selected Professions Fellowships: Awards $5,000-$20,000 awards to women in the final year of graduate study in designated fields where women's participation has been low, and to engineering doctoral candidates who are in the final stages of writing their dissertations.

 

Summer/Short-Term Research Publication Grants: Awards six $6,000 grants to women college and university faculty and independent researchers to prepare research for publication.

 

University Scholar-in-Residence: Colleges and universities may apply for this funding to support a woman scholar to undertake and disseminate research on gender and equity for women and girls. The stipend is not to exceed $50,000 for a one-year project or $100,000 for a two-year project.
